The Problem With “Sustainable” Labels: Are We Measuring the Right Things?

Sustainability has become one of the most recognizable labels in modern businesses. From infrastructure and packaging to energy and transportation, nearly every item carries some form of “green”, “eco-friendly”, or “sustainable” branding. While this reflects a growing awareness of environmental responsibility, it also raises an important question: are we measuring true sustainability or are we simply rewarding visibility?


In many cases, sustainability is understood by what is easiest to communicate. A company might highlight recycled materials, carbon-neutral shipping or renewable energy usage. These efforts matter but they often represent isolated improvements rather than full system ones. A product may appear environmentally responsible while still relying on inefficient logistics, energy-intensive production or infrastructure that creates hidden waste.


This creates a gap between reported sustainability and actual system performance.


Energy systems show this clearly, Much attention is placed on how energy is produced, particularly through renewable sources. However, production is only one part of the equation. How energy is distributed and consumed is equally important.


Even with cleaner energy systems, inefficiencies are still present. Demand spikes and can strain grids unnecessarily. Devices continue to draw power when idle. Charging behaviour is often driven by convenience rather than efficiency. Individually, these actions seem minor but at a large scale they rapidly become significant.


Because of this, sustainability cannot be understood through output alone, it also depends on coordination and timing within the system itself.


The more relevant question then becomes whether a system reduces waste across its full operation, not just whether its inputs appear sustainable. This is particularly relevant in electric mobility. EV adoption is presented as a clean transition in transport, but the overall impact depends heavily on charging patterns, grid demand and infrastructure management.


Smarter systems are starting to address these gaps by shifting energy use to more efficient periods and balancing demand more effectively.
